Book of Dead Volatility: Two Ratings, One Game

In short: Play'n GO has rated Book of Dead twice on its own ten-point scale and reached two answers. Its 2022 rules document says 10, very high. Its 2026 document and current game record say 7, high.

Two Play'n GO documents rate the same slot differently, four years apart. We read both, and we also watched the same feature pay 13.5 times the bet in one session and 65 times in the next.

The Two Volatility Ratings Play'n GO Published

Play'n GO has published two different volatility ratings for this slot, four years apart, on its own ten-point scale. Its 2022 rules document prints "Volatility: 10 VERY HIGH". Its 2026 rules document, and the game record on its own website, print 7 and label it HIGH.

Figures current as of ; the operator's live terms prevail.

We read both documents ourselves.

Neither is a catalogue guess, and neither withdraws the other. The maths may well have stayed put while the scale or the rating method moved underneath it, and Play'n GO does not say which happened. A studio is entitled to revise a rating; what it is not entitled to is having both versions quoted at readers as though they were the same claim. What follows for anyone reading a spec sheet is simple enough: a bare high-volatility label on this game is less stable than it looks, and the number beside it matters more than the word.

Volatility as We Saw It in Play

Two recorded sessions in the developer's own demo, both at a fixed 1.00 stake, landed one free-spin feature each. The same feature, off the same three-scatter trigger, paid 13.5 times the bet in the first session and 65 times in the second.

The Same Feature, Twice

SessionPaid spinsFeature paidShare of that session's return
First46675 coins, 13.5x the bet43%
Second2043,250 coins, 65x the bet37%

That is the shape of the game in two numbers.

Nearly five times the difference between one feature and the next, and in both runs a single event carried well over a third of everything that came back.

Sixty-six of the 204 paid spins in the longer session returned anything at all. We are describing our own sample there, not a property of the slot, and 204 spins measure nothing about a long-run return.

Why the Symbol Draw Decides It

Before each free-spin sequence the game picks one ordinary symbol at random to expand for the whole feature. Draw Rich Wilde and three full reels pay 5,000 a line. Draw the 10 and the same three reels pay 100 a line.

Both of our sequences drew the 10, the cheapest symbol on the paytable. The second still paid 3,250 coins, because expanded symbols pay with gaps allowed inside the feature, so a reel full of tens across the grid adds up faster than the paytable alone suggests. The first drew the same symbol under the same rule and paid 675.

Same draw, same mechanic, results five times apart.

Volatility and Your Bankroll

Treat the feature as the whole game and the base spins as the wait. Our longer session finished 28.00 down across 204 spins, and that is with one feature returning 65.00 inside it. Take the feature out and the arithmetic gets bleak quickly.

We would not recommend this slot to anyone playing a short session at a stake they would mind losing. The swing it is rated for is real, and a run can end a long way from any published average in either direction.
